Definition of Dobelle, William H.
Dobelle, William H.: (1941-2004) A biomedical researcher who redesigned the artificial hip, developed a portable breathing pacemaker and an experimental partial vision system for the blind involving transmission of electrical signals to electrodes implanted in the brain. The system used a tiny camera mounted in glasses worn by the blind person. The camera images were relayed to a portable computer and transmitted to surgically implanted electrodes attached to the brain's visual cortex.
