Peramivir: Emergency Drug Authorization for
Swine Flu Hospitalized Patients
The FDA recently issued an Emergency Use Authorization for Peramivir, an experimental antiviral drug for the treatment of severe swine flu. Peramivir, a neuraminidase inhibitor, now joins Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir) on the short list of drugs that treat infection caused by the H1N1 virus. Pandemic or not, swine flu vaccines remain available in two forms: Both the swine flu intranasal vaccine (live, attenuated) and the swine flu shot vaccine (inactivated) promote H1N1 immunity.
