Have been taking this medication with a spacer for my severe chronic asthma and severe COPD since shortly after FDA approval in 2000. It has worked extremely well in keeping my lung function stable and preventing breakthrough symptoms with low doses. Using the spacer has helped prevent me from having exacerbations and allowed me to maintain my active lifestyle. I have always used the spacer, with the recommendation of my pulmonologist to minimize my side effects and have never had thrush. My bone density has also remained normal because it has allowed me to use less inhaled steroid than some of the competing brands require for maintenance. My teens and husband have also successfully used Qvar for their mild intermittent asthma, during flares and found it very effective as well. All in all, I have found this a great medication. I have Asthma and was coughing almost non-stop. My Doctor added Qvar along with my regular Proventil Inh. and in one week I was 88% back to normal on Peak flow. Yes I still have bad days but QVAR is working for me. You must use it daily and not miss any doses. Also wash out your mouth after each use. Your voice sounds may change somewhat but it's the breathing and life that count, make the most of that God given life. Published: November 12, 2007 ::

Have used this medication daily since 12/2000 (shortly after FDA approved it). I use it with a spacer & it has been the most effective inhaled steroid for my severe emphysema and chronic asthma. When I have a flare up, I am able to have a burst of inhaled steroid instead of prednisone. At very high doses (8-10 puffs/day of 80mcg), I have noticed increased bruising and some trouble sleeping. At the lower doses of 2-4 puffs/day, I have not noticed any side effects. As it is an inhaled steroid, I have read of some folks who have gotten thrush infections from it, but I never have in the years I've taken it. It is a more effective inhaled steroid for me than any other I've tried, including Pulmicort and Aerobid. I'm also pleased that it's on my insurer's preferred formulary. My pulmo was on the committee that helped develop this med in the HFA formulation & he & his group believe that the smaller particle size of this medication increases the likelihood that the medication can get into the smallest airways, where our condition is worst (at least I know that's where my major problems are). It took me about three weeks of using before I noticed a difference. I now use my rescue inhaler a few times a week as opposed to the few times a day. Published: May 19, 2008 ::

I had serious mood disturbances with QVAR and had to come off it after 3 weeks. It definitely helped my asthma but the mood changes were so rapid and severe, I had to stop. Published: July 24, 2009 ::
