Vancomycin Hydrochloride User Reviews
Vancomycin Hydrochloride - User Reviews
Admitted to hospital w lymes disease and 106 fever - was given vancomycin iv and three days later had severe respitory failure. Doctors cannot give cause for this condition and once vancomycin removed, condition cleared.
I had MRSA following surgery and was treated in the hospital with IV vancomycin for 7 days. The medication and infection made me extremely tired and weak. No other side effects noted.
I was on this med first at the hospital for 10 days, and then at home through a pic line for 14. The first day on the drug, I had red-mans and so they gave me IV benedril. Worked wonders for me, but being on benedril for a month equates to little functioning. For me, it was more of an error on the doctors part that led me to this drug. When a doctor doesn't know why their prescribed drug isn't clearing up an infection - don't let them just go to the most potent and toxic drug. A good doctor will explore other options. It took me going to the Mayo clinic after 4 weeks of pain and anxiety to heal. They diagnosed me in 15 minutes and I was back at work a week later. The original doctors never even looked at the possibility of a viral infection. And even the most hardcore antibiotic will do nothing for a virus. I don't have any lasting side effects from the drug, but it sounds as though doctors don't use it often for a reason. Skin issues can be hard to diagnose. Just make sure your doctor does a culture for both bacterial/viral infections throughout the course. A secondary infection can show up after the initial tests and if not treated will appear to be a "resistant" bacteria. Obviously just my own case and I am not a doctor. But information is power!

This medicine was givrn to me prioe to having a whole knee relacment done and I dont know why my doctor did that because I started itching on my scalp, and welps on my body and my face turned red. I was taken off the drug prior to surgery and given something else so the surgery was delayed because of this. Once i was only allergic to one drug in my life which is penicillin and now I have found out I am alleric to Vancomycin also. Doctors should hav e to tell a patient why they are giving certain drugs before they are given to them.
I started out needing a hip replacement. Was done sucessfully but had an infection set in. Had to re-enter the hospital again and remove infection and tissue. Was put on vancomycin and developed "red man syndrome". Dose was deluted and had no further adverse reaction from the antibiotic. It was a staph infection and the recommended time treatment is 6-8 weeks, depending on the blood analysis taken each week. I did a self administration by picc and found it quite easy to handle. The only side effect I have found is that is seems very hard to fall to sleep. It seems as if I have "restless leg syndrome", except over my entire body. I was prescribed vallium for sleep and percacet for pain. The vallium did not seem to be effective and was then prescribed Ambien CR to help me sleep. I am hoping this will better the situation. Some of the really noticable side affects is that most of the time, I feel like a rubber band wound up real tight and no one wants to let loose of the propeller, especially when it's time to go to bed. Aside from the infection and the continuous iv of antibiotic, I'd say it was a pretty succcessfull proceedure. The doctor advised me that after 2 or 3 days after stopping the vancomycin, the sleeplessness would no longer be a problem. I hope this has been a helpfull input for those who seek information regarding this.

During surgery I was given an epidural for pain. When the epidural was removed, I was infected but did not realize it until after I was home for 5 days. An abscess developed in my spine diagnosed as MRSA and required spinal surgery to remove. I was on Vanc for approximately 49 days at home and had absolutely no adverse reaction.
