What is Paget's disease?

Paget's disease is a chronic condition of bone characterized by disorder of the normal bone remodeling process. Normal bone has a balance of forces that act to lay down new bone and take up old bone. This relationship (referred to as "bone remodeling") is essential for maintaining the normal calcium levels in our blood. In bone affected by Paget's disease, the bone remodeling is disturbed and not synchronized. As a result, the bone that is formed is abnormal, enlarged, not as dense, brittle, and prone to breakage (fracture).

Paget's disease affects older skeletal bone of adults. It's estimated that 1% of adults in the U.S. have Paget's disease. There is also an extremely rare form of Paget's disease in children, referred to as juvenile Paget's disease. Paget's disease is also known as osteitis deformans.

What happens if I miss a dose (Skelid)?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not take tiludronate within 2 hours before or after eating, or taking other medicines. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose (Skelid)?

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

Symptoms of a tiludronate overdose may include nausea, heartburn, stomach pain, diarrhea, muscle cramps, numbness or tingling, tight muscles in your face, seizure (convulsions), irritability, and unusual thoughts or behavior.

What should I avoid while taking tiludronate (Skelid)?

For at least 2 hours after taking tiludronate, avoid taking antacids, supplements, or medicines that contain aluminum, calcium, magnesium, or other minerals. They can make it harder for your body to absorb tiludronate.

Aspirin or indomethacin (Indocin) can also lower your body's absorption of tiludronate. If you use these other medicines, do not that take them for at least 2 hours after taking tiludronate.

What other drugs will affect tiludronate (Skelid)?

Do not take any other medicines including vitamins, calcium, or antacids for at least 2 hours before or 2 hour after taking tiludronate.

There may be other drugs that can affect tiludronate. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
