What is acne?
Acne (acne vulgaris, common acne) is a disease of the hair follicles of the face, chest, and back that affects almost all males and females during puberty; the only exception being teenage members of a few primitive isolated tribes living in Neolithic societies. It is not caused by bacteria, although bacteria play a role in its development. It is not unusual for some women to develop acne in their mid- to late-20s.
Acne appears on the skin as...

- tender red bumps also known as pimples or zits,
- pustules, and occasionally as
- cysts (deep pimples, boils).
You can do a lot to treat your acne using products available at a drugstore or cosmetic counter that do not require a prescription. However, for tougher cases of acne, you should consult a physician for treatment options.

Solodyn (minocycline hydrochloride) is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, severe acne, gonorrhea, tick fever, chlamydia, and others. It is a tetracycline antibiotic. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lightheadedness, dizziness, unsteadiness, drowsiness, mild headache, mouth sores, or cough.
The recommended dosage of Solodyn is approximately 1 mg/kg once daily for 12 weeks. Solodyn may interact with cholesterol-lowering medications, isotretinoin, tretinoin, antacids, products containing bismuth subsalicylate (e.g. Pepto-Bismol), minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements, blood thinners, or penicillin antibiotics. Tell your doctor all medications or supplements you are taking. Solodyn is not recommended for use during pregnancy because of possible harm to a fetus. It should not be used in women or men trying to have a child. Women of child-bearing age and men should use birth control while taking this medication. This medication passes into breast milk in very small amounts. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Indication
SOLODYN® (minocycline hydrochloride) is indicated to treat only inflammatory lesions of non-nodular moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older.
Limitations of Use
SOLODYN® (minocycline hydrochloride) did not demonstrate any effect on non-inflammatory acne lesions. Safety of SOLODYN® (minocycline hydrochloride) has not been established beyond 12 weeks of use. Solodyn Consumer Information: Uses
This medication is used to treat moderate to severe acne in patients 12 years of age and older. It helps to reduce the number of pimples. Minocycline belongs to the class of antibiotics known as tetracyclines. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria that may worsen acne.
This antibiotic is approved to treat acne that is thought to be caused by a bacterial infection. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
