Insomnia, a disorder of sleep, occurs occasionally in most people but usually lasts only a few days. The body then "corrects" itself naturally, and people return to a normal pattern of sleep. Insomnia may be short-term (less than three weeks) or chronic, lasting longer than three weeks. Contributing factors include, but are not limited to, poor sleeping habits, stress, jet lag, medications, disease, and depression. Chronic insomnia may warrant the use of sedative/hypnotics medications; however, it is important that the treating physician perform a complete diagnostic evaluation as well as take medication and substance abuse histories, to exclude secondary insomnia due to other conditions.

What is the most important information I should know about SONATA (zaleplon) ?
After taking SONATA (zaleplon) , you may get up out of bed while not being fully awake and do an activity that you do not know you are doing. The next morning, you may not remember that you did anything during the night. You have a higher chance for doing these activities if you drink alcohol or take other medicines that make you sleepy with SONATA (zaleplon) . Reported activities include:

What is SONATA (zaleplon) ?
SONATA (zaleplon) is a sedative-hypnotic (sleep) medicine. SONATA (zaleplon) is used in adults for the short-term treatment of the symptom of trouble falling asleep from insomnia. SONATA (zaleplon) does not treat other symptoms of insomnia which include waking up too early in the morning and waking up often during the night.
SONATA (zaleplon) is not for children.
SONATA (zaleplon) is a federally controlled substance (C-IV) because it can be abused or lead to dependence. Keep SONATA (zaleplon) in a safe place to prevent misuse and abuse. Selling or giving away SONATA (zaleplon) may harm others, and is against the law. Tell your doctor if you have ever abused or been dependent on alcohol, prescription medicines or street drugs.
