Sumycin (Tetracycline Hydrochloride) is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and others. It is an antibiotic. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, mouth sores, black hairy tongue, sore throat, dizziness, headache, or rectal discomfort.
The usual daily dose of Sumycin for adults is 500 mg twice/day or 250 mg four times/day for mild to moderate infections; higher doses may be required for severe infections. For children above eight years of age, usual daily dose of Sumycin is 10 to 20 mg/lb (25 to 50 mg/kg) body weight divided in four equal doses. Sumycin may interact with cholesterol-lowering medications, isotretinoin, tretinoin, antacids, bismuth subsalicylate (i.e. Pepto-Bismol), minerals (iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements), blood thinners, or penicillin antibiotics. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. Sumycin is not recommended for use during pregnancy because of possible harm to a fetus. Women of child-bearing age should use effective birth control while taking this medication. This medication passes into breast milk in very small amounts. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
