What is chronic cough?

Chronic cough is a cough that persists. Chronic cough is not a disease in itself; rather it is a symptom of an underlying condition. Chronic cough is a common problem and the reason for many doctor visits.

What are causes of chronic cough?

DRUG DESCRIPTION

TESSALON (benzonate capsules) , a non-narcotic oral antitussive agent, is 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26-nonaoxaoctacosan-28-yl p­(butylamino) benzoate; with a molecular weight of 603.7.

Benzonatate, USP 200 mg

TESSALON (benzonate capsules) Capsules also contain: D&C Yellow 10, gelatin, glycerin, methylparaben and propylparaben.

What are the possible side effects of benzonatate (Tessalon, Tessalon Perles)?

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop taking benzonatate and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • a choking feeling;
  • chest pain or numbness;
  • feeling like you might pass out;
  • confusion; or
  • hallucinations.

What are the precautions when taking benzonate capsules (Tessalon)?

Before taking benzonatate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to certain anesthetic agents (e.g., procaine, tetracaine); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history.

This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
