  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infections of the urethra, bladder, ureters, or the kidneys, which comprise the urinary tract.
  • E. coli bacteria cause the majority of UTIs, but many other bacteria, fungi, and parasites may also cause UTIs.

To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of UREX (methenamine hippurate) and other antibacterial drugs, UREX (methenamine hippurate) should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.

Urex Patient Information: Side Effects

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking methenamine and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:

  • an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; or hives;
  • lower back or side pain;
  • blood in urine; or
  • increasingly painful or difficult urination.

Urex Consumer Information: Uses

Methenamine is used to prevent or control returning urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria. It is not used to treat an active infection. Other antibiotics must be used first to treat and cure the infection. Methenamine is an antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria in urine. This medication also contains an ingredient that helps to make the urine acidic. When the urine is acidic, methenamine turns into formaldehyde to kill the bacteria.
