Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia »
The prostate is a small organ about the size of a walnut. It lies below the bladder (where urine is stored) and surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder). The prostate makes a fluid that helps to nourish sperm as part of the semen (ejaculatory fluid).
Prostate problems are common in men 50 and older. Most can be treated successfully without harming sexual function. A urologist is a specialist in diseases of the urinary system, including diagnosing and treating problems of the prostate gland.
A doctor usually can detect an enlarged prostate by rectal exam. The doctor also may examine the urethra, prostate, and bladder using a cytoscope, an instrument that is inserted through the penis.

Uroxatral (alfuzosin hcl) is prescribed to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), which include painful or difficult urination, urination urgency or frequency. It is in a class of medications called alpha blockers. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include dizziness, headache and fatigue. Other side effects may occur.
Uroxatral is available as an extended-release 10 mg tablet, taken orally once daily. Tell your doctor if you are taking other alpha blockers, nitrates, antihypertensive medications, antifungals, or drugs to treat erectile dysfunction as adverse reactions may occur. Uroxatral is not indicated for use in women. Do not crush, chew, or split the extended-release tablets as this will release the whole drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.
Our Uroxatral Drug Center provides a comprehensive view of available drug information as well as related drugs, user reviews, supplements, and diseases and conditions articles.
