Xylocaine Viscous 2% (lidocaine hydrochloride) is a local anesthetic and is available in generic form. Xylocaine Viscous 2% is indicated to provide the topical relief of pain and discomfort. Some serious side effects can occur if too much is used and may include but are not limited to: drowsiness, numbness of the tongue, and light-headedness.
Xylocaine Viscous 2% is available in strength of 20mg/ml. Dosing is variable; it should be given in reduced doses in geriatric over 65 years of age and pediatrics less than 18 years of age and should be used with caution in children younger than two years of age. General dosing of Xylocaine Viscous 2% is used concomitantly with other products containing lidocaine, the total dose contributed by all formulations must be calculated. Xylocaine Viscous should also be used with caution in patients with epilepsy, impaired cardiac conduction, bradycardia, impaired hepatic or renal function and in severe shock. Excessive dosage or short intervals between doses can result in high plasma levels of Xylocaine or its metabolites. There are no adequate studies in pregnant women. Xylocaine is excreted in breast milk and at therapeutic doses the quantities are small and generally not expected to be a risk for the infant. Xylocaine is for topical use only and must not be used for injection.
