What are birth control pills and how do they work?

Birth control pills are also known as oral contraceptives (OCs) or, simply, “the pill.” They offer protection against pregnancy by blocking the union of sperm and egg, thereby preventing conception.

Oral contraceptives or birth control pills contain synthetic female hormones. They work largely by preventing the release of an egg from an ovary, or ovulation. If no egg is released, there can be no pregnancy.

Stopping ovulation is not the only way birth control pills can work. The progestin or synthetic progesterone in birth control pills also changes the physical and chemical environment of the female reproductive tract, making it hostile for sperm.

What are the different types of birth control pills?

The active ingredients in birth control pills are synthetic versions of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Combination oral contraceptives are birth control...

Medical Editor: Melissa Conrad Stöppler, MD

Yasmin (ethinyl estradiol/drospirenone) is a 28-day oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin is a combination of two hormones that works by inhibiting the release of an egg during the menstrual cycle. Common side effects of Yasmin include nausea, vomiting, headache, bloating, and weight changes.

Some medications that may interact with Yasmin including aromatase inhibitors (such as anastrozole [Arimidex], exemestane [Aromasin]), fosamprenavir (Lexiva), raloxifene (Evosta), sodium tetradecyl sulfate (Sotradecol), and tamoxifen (Soltamox, Nolvadex). Women who smoke cigarettes/use tobacco and are over 35 years old should not use Yasmin because of the risks of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor immediately. Yasmin passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing infant.

Yasmin Consumer Information: Uses

This medication is a combination of 2 hormones: an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and a progestin (drospirenone). This product is used to prevent pregnancy. It works mainly by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) during your menstrual cycle. It also makes vaginal fluid thicker to help prevent sperm from reaching an egg (fertilization) and changes the lining of the uterus (womb) to prevent attachment of a fertilized egg. If a fertilized egg does not attach to the uterus, it passes out of the body.

Besides preventing pregnancy, birth control pills may make your periods more regular, dec...
