What is a migraine headache?

A migraine headache is a form of vascular headache. Migraine headache is caused by vasodilatation (enlargement of blood vessels) that causes the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the large arteries of the brain. Enlargement of these blood vessels stretches the nerves that coil around them and causes the nerves to release chemicals. The chemicals cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery. The increasing enlargement of the arteries magnifies the pain.

Migraine attacks commonly activate the sympathetic nervous system in the body. The sympathetic nervous system is often thought of as the part of the nervous system that controls primitive responses to stress and pain, the so-called "fight or flight" response, and this activation causes many of the symptoms associated with migraine attacks; for example, the increased sympathetic nervous activity in the intestine causes nausea, vomiting,...

Zomig (zolmitriptan) is used to treat migraine headaches that have already begun. It will not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks. It is not used to treat common tension headaches or any headache that is not a migraine headache as diagnosed by a doctor. It is a vasoconstrictor. Common side effects include tingling/numbness, nausea, dry mouth, weakness, drowsiness, or dizziness.

The initial dose of Zomig is 2.5 mg or less. The dose can be repeated after 2 hours if symptoms persist. The maximum dose is 10 mg per day. Zomig may interact with other migraine headache medicines, cimetidine, or antidepressants. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking. During pregnancy, Zomig should be used only when prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

ZOMIG (zolmitriptan) is indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults.

ZOMIG (zolmitriptan) is not intended for the prophylactic therapy of migraine or for use in the management of hemiplegic or basilar migraine (see CONTRAINDICATIONS). Safety and effectiveness of ZOMIG (zolmitriptan) have not been established for cluster headache, which is present in an older, predominantly male population.
