What is chickenpox? What causes chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a common childhood skin disease caused by a viral infection. The virus involved is called the varicella-zoster virus. Today, chickenpox is less common in the United States due to universal vaccination with the varicella virus vaccine, though it still occurs in populations that are not routinely vaccinated. Varicella-zoster virus is often categorized with the other common so-called "viral exanthems" (viral rashes) such as measles (rubeola), German measles (rubella), fifth disease (parvovirus B19), mumps virus, and roseola (human herpesvirus 6), but these viruses are unrelated except for their tendency to cause rashes.

Zovirax Ointment (acyclovir ointment) is used to treat cold sores and genital herpes. Zovirax is an antiviral drug and is available in generic form. Common side effects include mild, temporary burning or stinging when applied.

Zovirax Ointment should be applied in sufficient quantity to adequately cover all lesions every 3 hours, 6 times per day for 7 days. The dose size varies depending upon the lesions. Before using Zovirax, tell your doctor if you are allergic to valacyclovir, another antiviral medication. This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as polyethylene glycol), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Zovirax Ointment Consumer Information: Uses

This medication is used to treat the first outbreak of genital herpes infection. It is also used to treat non-life-threatening herpes infections of the skin and around the mouth (cold sores) in people with a weakened immune system. This medication may decrease the length of time you have pain and help the sores heal faster. Acyclovir is an antiviral drug. It stops the growth of certain viruses.
