What Is Cipro HC Otic?

Cipro HC Otic (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride and hydrocortisone otic suspension) is a combination of an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid indicated for the treatment of acute otitis externa in adult and pediatric patients, one year and older, due to susceptible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Proteus mirabilis.

What Are Side Effects of Cipro HC Otic?

Cipro HC Otic may cause serious side effects including:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • skin rash (no matter how mild), and
  • new ear drainage with severe itching  

Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

Common side effects of Cipro HC Otic include:

  • headache and
  • itching.

Rare side effects of Cipro HC Otic include:

  • migraine,
  • diminished sensation of touch,
  • numbness and tingling,
  • fungal dermatitis,
  • cough,
  • rash,
  • hives, and
  • hair loss.

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

  • Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Serious heart symptoms such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out;
  • Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

Dosage for Cipro HC Otic

For children (age 1 year and older) and adults, a dose of 3 drops of Cipro HC Otic suspension should be instilled into the affected ear twice daily for seven days. Follow your doctor's instructions on administration.

Cipro HC Otic may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Cipro HC Otic During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Cipro HC Otic; it is unknown how it would affect a fetus. Systemically used ciprofloxacin passes into breast milk. It is unknown if ciprofloxacin passes into breast milk with topical otic administration. Because of the potential for adverse reactions in nursing infants, breastfeeding while using Cipro HC Otic is not recommended.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using the ear drops and call your doctor at once if you have:

  • a skin rash (no matter how mild); or
  • new ear drainage with severe itching (may be signs of a yeast infection).

Common side effects may include:

  • fussiness or irritability;
  • headache; or
  • stuffy nose and sore throat.

SIDE EFFECTS

In Phase 3 clinical trials, a total of 564 patients were treated with CIPRO® HC OTIC. Adverse events with at least remote relationship to treatment included headache (1.2%) and pruritus (0.4%). The following treatment-related adverse events were each reported in a single patient: migraine, hypesthesia, paresthesia, fungal dermatitis, cough, rash, urticaria, and alopecia.

The following reactions have been identified during post-approval use of CIPRO HC OTIC in clinical practice.  Because they are reported voluntarily from a population of unknown size, estimates of frequency cannot be made.  The reactions, which have been chosen for inclusion due to either their seriousness, frequency of reporting, possible causal connection to CIPRO HC OTIC, or a combination of these factors include:  dizziness, ear canal erythema, ear congestion, hypoacusis and medication residue.
