What Is Fluocinonide and How Does It Work?

Fluocinonide is a prescription cream corticosteroid, indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and hive manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses.

Fluocinonide is available under the following different brand names: Lidemol, Lidex, Lyderm, Tiamol, Topactin, Topsyn, and Vanos.

Dosage of Fluocinonide:

Adult and Pediatric Dosages:

Cream

  • 0.05%
  • 0.1%

Ointment/Gel/Topical Solution

  • 0.05%

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Corticosteroid Responsive Dermatoses

Adult:

  • Apply thin layer topically each day or every 12 hours to affected areas

Pediatric:

  • Apply thin layer topically each day or every 12 hours to affected areas; limit to the minimum amount necessary for therapeutic efficacy

Psoriasis

  • Apply thin layer topically each day or every 12 hours to affected areas

Atopic Dermatitis

  • Apply thin layer topically each day to affected areas

What Are Warnings and Precautions for Fluocinonide?

Warnings

This medication contains fluocinonide. Do not take Lidemol, Lidex, Lyderm, Tiamol, Topactin, Topsyn, or Vanos if you are allergic to fluocinonide or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately

Long-Term Effects

  • Chronic topical corticosteroid therapy may interfere with growth and development in children
  • Kaposi's sarcoma reported with prolonged corticosteroid therapy

Cautions

  • Chronic topical corticosteroid therapy may interfere with growth and development in children
  • Use medium to very high potency for less than 2 weeks to reduce local and systemic side effects
  • Use low potency for chronic therapy
  • Kaposi's sarcoma reported with prolonged corticosteroid therapy
  • Avoid medium to very high potency on face, folds, groin because can increase steroid absorption
  • If possible, use lower potency for children (increase BSA/kg, therefore increase systemic absorption)
  • Children may exhibit greater susceptibility to corticosteroid-induced HPA axis suppression and Cushing's syndrome due to larger skin surface area to body weight ratio

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use fluocinonide during pregnancy with caution if benefits outweigh risks
  • Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available, or neither animal nor human studies were done
  • Excretion of fluocinonide into breast milk is unknown, therefore use with caution if breastfeeding
  • Consult your treating physician prior to use
