What Is Aluminum Hydroxide/Magnesium Trisilicate and How Does It Work?

Aluminum hydroxide/magnesium trisilicate is an over-the-counter (OTC) product used to treat gastric hyperacidity and heartburn.

Aluminum hydroxide/magnesium trisilicate is available under the following different brand names: Gaviscon Regular Strength Tablets.

Dosage Forms and Strengths

Tablet, Chewable

  • 80mg/14.2mg

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Gastric Hyperacidity, Heartburn

  • Regular Strength Tablets: Chew 2-4 tablets orally every 6 hours as needed; not to exceed 16 tablets/day
  • Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients

Warnings
This medication contains aluminum hydroxide/magnesium trisilicate. Do not take Gaviscon Regular Strength Tablets if you are allergic to aluminum hydroxide/magnesium trisilicate or any ingredients contained in this drug.


Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.

Cautions

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or hearing impairment may reflect toxicity
  • Caution in renal failure
  • Caution in magnesium restricted diet
  • May increase or decrease rate and/or degree of absorption of concomitantly administered oral drugs by changing gastrointestinal (GI) transit time, pH, or by cationic binding

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use aluminum hydroxide/magnesium trisilicate with caution during pregnancy if benefits outweigh risks. Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done.

It is unknown whether aluminum hydroxide/magnesium trisilicate is distributed in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
