What Is Nystatin and How Does It Work?

Nystatin is used to treat fungal infections of the mouth or intestines. Nystatin is an antifungal that works by stopping the growth of fungus.

Nystatin powder for suspension should not be used to treat fungal infections of the blood.

Nystatin is available under the following different brand names: Mycostatin, Nilstat, Nyamyc, Nystat Rx, Nystatin Systemic, Nystex, and Nystop.

Dosage of Nystatin:

  • 100,000units/g

Oral suspension

  • 100,000units/mL

Dosing Consideraations – Should be Given as Follows:

Oropharyngeal Candidiasis

  • Adult: Oral suspension: 400,000-600,000 units orally every 6 hours; swish in mouth several minutes and then swallow
  • Premature infants: 100,000 units orally every 6 hours; paint suspension into recesses of the mouth
  • Infants: 200,000 units orally every 6 hours (100,000 units in each side of mouth); paint suspension into recesses of the mouth
  • Children: Oral suspension: 400,000-600,000 units orally every 6 hours; swish in mouth several minutes and then swallow

Intestinal Candidiasis

Adult and Pediatric

  • Oral tablets: 500,000-1,000,000 units every 8 hours
  • Powder: 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoonful in 1/2 cup of water (500,000-1,000,000 units) orally every 8 hours

Administration

  • Retain suspension in mouth as long as possible before swallowing

Warnings

  • This medication contains nystatin. Do not take Mycostatin, Nilstat, Nyamyc, Nystat Rx, Nystatin Systemic, Nystex, or Nystop if you are allergic to nystatin or any ingredients contained in this drug
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately

Cautions

  • Not for use in systemic mycoses
  • Discontinue therapy if irritation or sensitization observed during use

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Use nystatin with caution during pregnancy if benefits outweigh risks
  • Animal studies show risk and human studies are not available or neither animal nor human studies were done
  • It is not known if nystatin is excreted in breast milk; use caution if breastfeeding
