What Is Passion Flower and How Does It Work?

Passion Flower suggested uses include: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cardiac rhythm abnormalities, generalized anxiety disorder, gastrointestinal (GI) upset, hemorrhoids (topical), insomnia, nervousness/excitability, neuralgias, opiate withdrawal symptoms, pain.

  • Passion Flower is possibly effective for nervous restlessness, anxiety, and for opiate withdrawal when used in combination with clonidine.
  • Passion Flower is available under the following different brand and other names: apricot vine, corona de cristo, Fleischfarbige, fleur de la passion, flor de passion, maypop, Passiflora incarnata, passion vine, purple passion flower, water lemon, and wild passion flower.

What Are Dosages of Passion Flower?

Suggested Dosing

General Dosing Guidelines

Dried

  • 0.25-2 g orally three times daily

Tea

  • 1 cup orally two to three times daily and 30 min before bedtime; 0.25-2 g/150 ml water

Liquid Extract

  • 0.5-1 ml orally three times daily; 1:1 in 25% alcohol

Tincture

  • 0.5-2 ml orally three times daily; 1:8 in 45% alcohol

Anxiety Disorder

  • Liquid extract: 45 gtt (drops) orally daily

Opiate Withdrawal

  • Liquid extract: 60 gtt (drops) orally daily

Do not take apricot vine, corona de cristo, Fleischfarbige, fleur de la passion, flor de passion, maypop, Passiflora incarnata, passion vine, purple passion flower, water lemon, and wild passion flower if you are allergic to passion flower or any ingredients contained in this drug.

Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
