Craniotomy: A type of surgery in which part of the skull (cranium) is temporarily removed to expose the brain for surgical repair. Craniotomies may be performed to treat brain infections, brain cancers, abscesses, swelling of the brain (cerebral edema), and bleeding within the skull.
