What Is Cromolyn sodium and How Does It Work?

Cromolyn sodium is a prescription medication used to treat mastocytosis, a disease that occurs when the body has too many mast cells which can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, stomach/abdominal pain, itching, rash, and flushing.

What Are Dosages of Cromolyn sodium?

Adult and pediatric dosage

Oral concentrate

  • 100mg/5mL
  • Mastocytosis
  • Adult dosage
  • 200 mg orally four times daily; 30 minutes before meals; may increase to 40 mg/kg/day if control of symptoms not seen within 2-3 weeks

Pediatric dosage

  • Children below 2 years: Safety and efficacy not established
  • Children between 2 to 12 years:100 mg orally four times daily; not to exceed 40 mg/kg/day; give 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime
  • Children above 12 years: As in adults; 200 mg orally four times daily; 30 minutes before meals; may increase to 40 mg/kg/day if control of symptoms not seen within 2-3 weeks

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Cromolyn sodium?

Common side effects of Cromolyn sodium include:

  • headache, 
  • muscle aches,
  • diarrhea,
  • nausea, and
  • abdominal pain.

Serious side effects of Cromolyn sodium include:

Rare side effects of Cromolyn sodium include:

  • serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling especially of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.

Cautions

  • Severe anaphylactic reactions may occur (rare)
  • Excreted through biliary and renal routes; monitor closely patients with hepatic/renal insufficiency; decrease dose in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function
  • Use caution in patients with a history of cardiac arrhythmia and hepatic or renal impairment
  • The oral concentrated solution should not be used for inhalation or injection
  • Not beneficial in the acute setting
  • Symptoms may reoccur when tapering or withdrawing the drug; use caution

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • May be acceptable during pregnancy.

Lactation

  • Unknown if excreted in breast milk, use caution.
