Cromolyn Sodium Ophthalmic

Cromolyn Sodium, Ophthalmic is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of Conjunctivitis.

Common side effects of Cromolyn Sodium, Ophthalmic include:

• Mild burning or stinging after using the eye drops,
• Dry or irritated eyes,
• Puffy eyes, and
• Watery eyes

Serious side effects of Cromolyn Sodium, Ophthalmic include:

• Hives,
• Difficulty breathing,
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and
• Severe burning, stinging, or irritation in the eyes

Rare side effects of Cromolyn Sodium, Ophthalmic include:

• none 

Seek medical care or call 911 at once if you have the following serious side effects:

• Severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors;
• Serious eye symptoms such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights;
• Serious heart symptoms include fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in the chest; shortness of breath; sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out.

Adult and pediatric dosage

Ophthalmic solution

• 4% (10mL)

Conjunctivitis

Adult dosage

• 1-2 drops in each eye 4-6 times/day at regular intervals
• Symptom relief is evident within a few days, but longer treatment (up to 6 weeks) may be required.

Pediatric dosage

• Below 4 years
  • Safety and efficacy not established.
• Above 4 years
  • 1-2 drops in each eye 4-6 times/day at regular intervals
  • Symptom relief is evident within a few days, but longer treatment (up to 6 weeks) may be required.

Cautions

• Transient burning/stinging upon instillation
• Do not exceed the frequency of administration.
• Severe anaphylaxis reactions may occur (rare)
• Transient burning or stinging may occur with ophthalmic use.
• Symptoms may occur when tapering or withdrawing the drug.

Pregnancy and Lactation

• May be acceptable during pregnancy.
• Lactation
  • Unknown whether distributed in breast milk.
