How do other dental products work?

Dental products are medications used to treat oral conditions that include mucogingival (gum) conditions and dry mouth. Dental products that do not fall into any specific classes of dental and oral care medications are categorized as other dental products.

Other dental products include the following:

  • Allogeneic cultured keratinocytes/fibroblasts in bovine collagen: Allogeneic cultured keratinocytes/fibroblasts in bovine collagen is a cellularized scaffold sheet used to treat mucogingival conditions such as receding gums and other gum defects. The cellularized sheet secretes growth factors and proteins (cytokines) that help in wound healing and tissue regeneration.
  • The scaffold sheet is composed of sterile human keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and extracellular matrix proteins obtained from donors and multiplied in cell banks, and bovine collagen (a type of insoluble fibrous protein), which provide structural support and help generate the growth of natural gum tissue.
  • Artificial saliva: Artificial saliva is used to relieve the symptoms of dry mouth, in the absence or insufficiency of natural saliva. Artificial saliva is composed of proteins, electrolytes, water, and other substances that moisten and lubricate the oral cavity and provide a mucous coating on the oral mucous membrane (mucosa). Xylitol, a sugar alcohol that is used in some saliva preparations, stimulates saliva production.
