What Is Liquid E-Z-PAQUE?

Liquid E-Z-PAQUE (barium sulfate) oral suspension is a radiographic contrast agent indicated for use in single contrast radiographic examinations of the esophagus, stomach, and small bowel to visualize the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in adult and pediatric patients.

Common side effects of Liquid E-Z-PAQUE include:

  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhea, and
  • abdominal cramping.

Dosage for Liquid E-Z-PAQUE

The recommended adult oral dose of Liquid E-Z-PAQUE is 150 mL to 750 mL (87g to 435g of barium sulfate, respectively). The recommended dose of Liquid E-Z-PAQUE for pediatric patients is adjusted based on relative GI volume.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Liquid E-Z-PAQUE?

Liquid E-Z-PAQUE may interact with other drugs. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use.

Liquid E-Z-PAQUE During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before using Liquid E-Z-PAQUE. Maternal use is not expected to result in fetal exposure to the drug. Because Liquid E-Z-PAQUE is not absorbed systemically following oral administration, and breastfeeding is not expected to result in exposure of the infant to Liquid E-Z-PAQUE. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • severe stomach pain;
  • severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, or constipation;
  • chest pain, trouble breathing or swallowing;
  • ringing in your ears;
  • sweating, confusion, fast heart rate; or
  • pale skin, blue-colored skin, weakness.

Common side effects may include:

  • mild stomach cramps;
  • nausea, vomiting; or
  • loose stools or mild constipation.

SIDE EFFECTS

The following adverse reactions have been identified from spontaneous reporting or clinical studies of barium sulfate administered orally. Because the reactions are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequency or to establish a causal relationship to drug exposure:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping
  • Serious adverse reactions and fatalities include aspiration pneumonitis, barium sulfate impaction, intestinal perforation with consequent peritonitis and granuloma formation, vasovagal and syncopal episodes
