Mature cystic teratoma is a type of tumor that can occur in the ovary. Ovarian teratomas are a rare type of tumor in the ovaries that are made up of developed tissues and organs such as teeth, hair, muscle, and bone. Mature cystic teratomas contain a fluid-filled sac (cyst) and contain structures resembling normal skin, hair follicles, hair, sweat glands, teeth, blood, fat, bone, nails, eyes, cartilage, and/or thyroid tissue. The diameter of these tumors is usually 10-15 cm. Most mature cystic teratomas are benign. Only 1%-3% are cancerous. It is also known as a dermoid cyst.
