Motion Sickness: Symptoms & Signs

Motion sickness is an unpleasant sensation that occurs in some people who travel by car, train, airplane, or boat.

Signs and symptoms of motion sickness include

  • a feeling of uneasiness followed by cold sweats,
  • dizziness,
  • nausea, and
  • vomiting.

Other symptoms associated with motion sickness can include

  • headache,
  • fatigue or tiredness,
  • increased saliva production, and
  • pallor (pale skin).

Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may come and go.

Causes of motion sickness

Car, train, boat, airplane, and amusement park rides are common causes of motion sickness. The sensation of motion (from the vestibular system in the inner ear) being different from what you see causes motion sickness. These are conflicting messages about motion and one's position in space that the brain must process.

Other motion sickness symptoms and signs

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue or Tiredness
  • Feeling of Uneasiness Followed by Cold Sweats
  • Headache
  • Increased Saliva Production
  • Nausea
  • Pallor
  • Vomiting
