What Are Dosages of Opium Tincture?
Adult dosage
Oral liquid: Schedule II
- 118 mL/bottle
- Each mL contains 10 mg of anhydrous morphine
Diarrhea
Adult dosage
- 6 mg (0.6 mL) orally every 6hours; not to exceed 6 mL/day

What Are Side Effects Associated with Using Opium Tincture?
Common side effects of Opium Tincture include:
- light-headedness,
- dizziness,
- drowsiness,
- tiredness,
- restlessness,
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- upset stomach,
- loss of appetite,
- constipation,
- increased sweating, or
- flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under the skin).
Serious side effects of Opium Tincture include:
- severe constipation, bloating, stomach cramps;
- urinating less than usual or not at all;
- fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats;
- light-headed feeling;
- severe drowsiness
- weak or shallow breathing; or
- seizures (convulsions).
Rare side effects of Opium Tincture include:
- none

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Respiratory disease/depression, diarrhea due to poison, pseudomembranous colitis, glaucoma, severe hepatic disease, convulsive disorders

Cautions
- Caution in asthma, severe prostatic hypertrophy, thyroid dysfunction, hepatic disease, history of opioid dependence, patients morbidly obese, and concurrent CNS depressants
- Caution in patients with head trauma
- Opium Tincture contains 25 times more morphine than paregoric & should never be confused with the latter
- Caution in patients with acute adrenal insufficiency (e.g., Addison's disease)
- Caution in patients with biliary tract dysfunction
- Caution in patients with GI hemorrhage
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Unknown whether the drug may cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant females or can affect reproduction capacity
- No animal studies conducted
- Lactation
- Exercise caution when administering to nursing females
