What Is Ortho Micronor?

Ortho Micronor (norethindrone) is a form of progesterone, a female hormone, used for birth control (contraception) to prevent pregnancy. Ortho Micronor is also used to treat menstrual disorders, endometriosis, or abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by a hormone imbalance. Ortho Micronor is available in generic form.

What Are Side Effects of Ortho Micronor?

Common side effects of Ortho Micronor include:

  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • stomach cramping,
  • bloating,
  • dizziness,
  • headache,
  • tiredness,
  • breast pain/swelling/tenderness,
  • decrease in breast size,
  • freckles or darkening of facial skin,
  • acne,
  • oily scalp,
  • hair loss,
  • increased hair growth,
  • weight gain,
  • vaginal itching/discharge/infections,
  • skin itching or rash,
  • changes in menstrual periods, or
  • decreased sex drive.

Tell your doctor if you have serious side effects of Ortho Micronor including:

  • lumps in the breast,
  • mental/mood changes (such as new/worsening depression),
  • severe stomach or abdominal pain,
  • unusual changes in vaginal bleeding (such as continuous spotting, sudden heavy bleeding, missed periods),
  • dark urine, or
  • yellowing eyes or skin

Dosage for Ortho Micronor

Ortho Micronor must be taken exactly as directed. One tablet is taken every day, at the same time. Administration is continuous, with no interruption between pill packs.

What Drugs, Substances, or Supplements Interact with Ortho Micronor?

Ortho Micronor may interact with griseofulvin, rifampin, St. John's wort, ketoconazole or itraconazole, barbiturates, or HIV medicines. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking.

Ortho Micronor During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

Ortho Micronor should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. This drug passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effect on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

  • sudden vision loss, bulging eyes, or severe headache;

  • increased thirst, increased urination;
  • liver problems--loss of appetite, stomach pain (upper right side), dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
  • signs of a blood clot--sudden numbness or weakness, problems with vision or speech, chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling or redness in an arm or leg.

SIDE EFFECTS

Adverse reactions reported with the use of POPs include:

  • Menstrual irregularity is the most frequently reported side effect.
  • Frequent and irregular bleeding are common, while long duration of bleeding episodes and amenorrhea are less likely.
  • Headache, breast tenderness, nausea, and dizziness are increased among progestin-only oral contraceptive users in some studies.
  • Androgenic side effects such as acne, hirsutism, and weight gain occur rarely.
