Are Quillichew ER and Focalin the Same Thing?
QuilliChew ER (methylphenidate hydrochloride) extended-release chewable tablets and Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) are central nervous system (CNS) stimulants used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Side effects of QuilliChew ER and Focalin that are similar include anxiety, decreased appetite, headache, dry mouth, sleep problems (insomnia), or restlessness.
Side effects of QuilliChew ER that are different from Focalin include weight loss, dizziness, irritability, mood swings, rapid heart rate, aggression, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, indigestion, nervousness, agitation, spinning sensation (vertigo), tremor, blurred vision, palpitations, increased sweating, fever, and increased blood pressure.
Side effects of Focalin that are different from QuilliChew ER include feeling jittery, stomach upset, or sore throat.
QuilliChew ER may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Focalin may interact with antidepressants, blood pressure medications, blood thinners, cold or allergy medicines that contains a decongestant, or seizure medicines.
Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop taking QuilliChew ER or Focalin.

During pregnancy, QuilliChew ER should be used only if prescribed. It is unknown if it would affect a fetus. QuilliChew ER passes into breast milk. It is unknown if it would affect a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop taking QuilliChew ER.

Focalin XR should be used only when prescribed during pregnancy. It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
How Should Quillichew ER Be Taken?
For patients 6 years and above, the recommended starting dose of QuilliChew ER is 20 mg given orally once daily in the morning.
How Should Focalin Be Taken?
The recommended starting dose of Focalin XR is 5 mg/day for pediatric patients and 10 mg/day for adult patients. Dosage may be adjusted in 5 mg increments for pediatric patients and in 10 mg increments for adult patients.
