Are Quillichew ER and Ritalin the Same Thing?

QuilliChew ER (methylphenidate hydrochloride) extended-release chewable tablets and Ritalin (methylphenidate) are central nervous system (CNS) stimulants used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Ritalin is also used to treat narcolepsy (uncontrollable sleepiness).

Side effects of QuilliChew ER and Ritalin that are similar include weight loss, anxiety, dizziness, rapid heart rate, decreased appetite, headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach/abdominal pain, sleep problems (insomnia), nervousness, agitation, blurred vision or vision problems, palpitations, increased sweating, and increased blood pressure.

Side effects of QuilliChew ER that are different from Ritalin include irritability, mood swings, aggression, indigestion, dry mouth, restlessness, spinning sensation (vertigo), tremor, or fever.

Side effects of Ritalin that are different from QuilliChew ER include skin rash, psychosis, and numbness, tingling, or cold feeling in your hands or feet.

QuilliChew ER may interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Ritalin may interact with blood thinners, clonidine, dobutamine, epinephrine, isoproterenol, cold/allergy medicine that contains phenylephrine (a decongestant), potassium citrate, sodium acetate, sodium bicarbonate, citric acid and potassium citrate, sodium citrate and citric acid, medications to treat high or low blood pressure, stimulant medications, diet pills, seizure medicines, or antidepressants.

Withdrawal symptoms may occur if you suddenly stop taking QuilliChew ER or Ritalin.
