Sarcoidosis: Symptoms & Signs

Sarcoidosis is a disease that causes inflammation in different body tissues. Sarcoidosis can appear suddenly and disappear or develop gradually and go on to produce symptoms that come and go. Sarcoidosis causes a specific form of inflammation known as granulomas, which are recognizable when doctors view the involved tissue under a microscope.

Sarcoidosis may not produce any symptoms or signs. When symptoms and signs do occur, they vary in severity and depend on the site of the body that is involved. Symptoms and signs that can occur include

The eyes may be involved, leading to

  • severe eye redness,
  • sensitivity to light,
  • burning eyes, and
  • itchy, dry eyes.

Cause of sarcoidosis

The cause of sarcoidosis is not understood, and it most commonly affects the lungs and the skin.
