Varnada Karriem-Norwood, MD

Varnada Karriem-Norwood, MD is an attending physician at Dekalb Medical Center in Atlanta. She is residency trained and board certified in both internal medicine and emergency medicine. She completed residency in 2000 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and served as chief resident for both departments.

Karriem-Norwood has presented many abstracts at National Medical Society conferences and published in journals including Annals of Emergency Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. Her research interests include cardiac markers in heart disease, chest pain evaluation, clinical decision units, and observation medicine. In addition, she serves as a training and education physician for Ross University Medical School in the Caribbean in emergency medicine clinical training for third and fourth year medical students.

Karriem-Norwood served as the associate medical director for the emergency department at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and medical director for the Chest Pain Center, and she developed the first Care Management Unit at this hospital. She served on many best practice committees for the hospital, the education committee, and the residency selection committee and served as the chairperson for the quality and performance improvement committee for the Emergency Department.

Karriem-Norwood is married with three small children and is involved in many school and volunteer activities with children, such as Girl Scouts of Atlanta.
