Are Symdeko and Orkambi the Same Thing?
Symdeko (tezacaftor/ivacaftor tablets and ivacaftor tablets) and Orkambi (lumacaftor/ivacaftor) are combinations of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) potentiators indicated for the treatment of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) aged 12 years and older who are homozygous for the F508del mutation.
Symdeko is also used to treat patients with cystic fibrosis who have at least one mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene that is responsive to tezacaftor/ivacaftor based on in vitrodata and/or clinical evidence.
Side effects of Symdeko and Orkambi that are similar include nausea and stuffy nose.
Side effects of Symdeko that are different from Orkambi include headache and dizziness.
Side effects of Orkambi that are different from Symdeko include shortness of breath, sore throat, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infection, fatigue, abnormal breathing, increased blood creatine phosphokinase, rash, gas, runny nose, flu symptoms, and increases in blood pressure.
Both Symdeko and Orkambi may interact with antifungals, antibiotics, rifampin, rifabutin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St. John's wort, and digoxin.
Symdeko may also interact with grapefruit, Seville oranges, cyclosporine, everolimus, sirolimus, and tacrolimus.
Orkambi may also interact with benzodiazepines, immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, ibuprofen, antidepressants, hormonal contraceptives, oral hypoglycemics, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2 blockers, antacids, and warfarin.

Common side effects of Symdeko include:
