What is Tagamet and how is it used?
Tagamet is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of heartburn, Benign Gastric Ulcer, Duodenal Ulcer, Erosive Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions and Renal Impairment. Tagamet may be used alone or with other medications.
Tagamet belongs to a class of drugs called Histamine H2 Antagonists.
What are the possible side effects of Tagamet?
Tagamet may cause serious side effects including:
- pain when swallowing,
- bloody or tarry stools,
- cough with bloody mucus,
- vomit that looks like coffee grounds,
- mood changes,
- anxiety,
- agitation,
- confusion,
- hallucinations, and
- breast swelling or tenderness
Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.
The most common side effects of Tagamet include:
- headache, and
- diarrhea
Tell the doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

- relieves heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach
- prevents heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach brought on by eating ordrinking certain foods and beverages
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Directions
- adults and children 12 years and older:
- to relieve symptoms, swallow 1 tablet with a glass of water
- to prevent symptoms, swallow 1 tablet with a glass of water right before or any time up to 30 minutes before eating food or drinking beverages that cause heartburn
- do not take more than 2 tablets in 24 hours
- children under 12 years: ask a doctor

- unexplained weight loss
- nausea or vomiting
- stomach pain
- had heartburn over 3 months. This may be a sign of a more serious condition.
- heartburn with lightheadedness, sweating or dizziness
- chest pain or shoulder pain with shortness of breath; sweating; pain spreading to arms, neck or shoulders; or lightheadedness
