Typhoid Fever: Symptoms & Signs

Typhoid fever is an acute infectious disease. Prior to the availability of antibiotic treatment, about 20% of those affected died from the condition.

Signs and symptoms of typhoid fever can include

  • poor appetite,
  • diarrhea,
  • lethargy and fatigue,
  • headaches,
  • body aches and pains, and
  • fever.

Other associated symptoms can include

Intestinal bleeding or perforation (rupture) are complications of typhoid fever that can occur after 2-3 weeks.

Cause of typhoid fever

Infection with Salmonella typhi bacteria causes typhoid fever. The infection spreads from person to person when people ingest contaminated food or water. A small percentage of people become carriers of the bacteria after recovering from the illness and can spread it to others. Typhoid fever is very contagious.
