What Is Wild Yam Used For and How Does it Work?

Wild yam suggested uses include for estrogen replacement therapy, painful menstruation, breast enlargement, diverticulosis, menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), gallbladder colic, libido enhancement, osteoporosis, postmenopausal vaginal dryness, premenstrual syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Topical wild yam appears to be no better than placebo for relieving vasomotor symptoms.

Wild yam taken orally is possibly ineffective. More studies are needed to determine efficacy.
